New Intercity Express Trains due to come to King's Lynn, Ely & Cambridge from 2018

Passengers using the Fen Line train route between King's Lynn, Downham Market, Ely, Cambridge and London Kings Cross can look forward to new trains and improved journey times from 2018 after government plans were confirmed this week.

The government is planning to introduce the new Intercity Express Programme, with 125mph trains, on the King's Lynn to London line from 2018.

The news was confirmed in the National Transport Infrastructure Document, which was released this week following chancellor George Osborne’s autumn statement.

The decision has been welcomed by the Fen Line Users Association, Chairman Colin Sampson told the Lynn News: “It is good news for us as we will have a pretty high class of unit of train to go from Lynn. “It has confirmed that the funding will stay in place for what we were expecting and that is satisfying.”

It is expected that the new trains will travel at the current speeds of up to 90mph from King's Lynn to Hitchin then at up to 125mph along the East Coast Mainline into London Kings Cross. It is also expected that the service will join the East Coast franchise as part of the programme although full details of this and how this will take place is not yet known.
