Looking back... The early years of Cambus - part 2

In this two part Looking back... photo special we are focusing on the early years of Cambus...

Cambus was formed in September 1984 when the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company was split in preparation for privatisation.

It took over Eastern Counties' bus and National Express coach operations from garages in Cambridgeshire as well as Newmarket and Haverhill in Suffolk.

All of the photographs included in this two part special were kindly supplied by our regular correspondant David Bell.

We finish with this interesting photograph taken at the Kings Dyke level crossing between Peterborough & Whittlesey, it shows 49 CNG, a former Bristol Lodekka which was new in 1963 and converted into a tow truck in 1975.

In 1986, two years after the company was formed it was sold to its management team, eventually being remamed Cambus Holdings Ltd, three years later in September 1989 the Peterborough area operations were split off to become Viscount Bus and Coach Company Ltd.

Then after several years of buyouts (including most of Premier Travel Services Ltd operations in 1990 and Millers Coaches of Foxton in 1992) and expansion into Buckinghamshire with the purchased of the holding company of Milton Keynes City Bus Ltd. and Buckinghamshire Road Car Ltd the company sold out to Stagecoach Holdings in December 1995.
